Hmmm...weird question...Umm the coral is an animal and the sand is, well, sand. Sorry if I seem sarcastic I am just not sure what you are driving at here.
Crushed coral is more coarse and provides more places for trapped food and detreius to rot and cause a spike in your nitrates. Where is sand doesn't allow that to happen as much.
