If I were to convert my aquaclear 50 hob to a refugium, would it be more effective at nutrient removal or would it harm the tank... Sorry if I sound ignorant, fairly new to the honby and just started my tank.
How big is your tank? Chaetomorpha & various types of Caulerpa need quite a bit of room to stretch out and grow for them to really be effective, so you might be better off just buying an efficient protein skimmer instead.
I modified an Aquaclear 110 to be a HOB refugium. I couldn't get the chaetomorpha to tumble, so it wasn't very effective in that respect. However, the extra flow, a place to keep a bag of carbon, and copepods were all benefits.
