Holy expensive anthias on LA

As always checking out LA's new additions in the DD. Happy to see a somewhat decent price for a bandit, though quite big. At least you know your getting a well adjusted fish, which is half the battle with bandits. Anyway..........

Looking at a the new anthias and a deep water cooks anthias is up there. 899.99. Anyone looking for a shoal?????? Pretty fish, thought it was a disbar at first glance.

They are really not that great and they are pretty delicate (similar to Ventralis but harder).
Old Town Aquarium also has them for sale as well.

Saw it at Old Town, beautiful fish.

A more colorful Lori's. If I had a chiller and could run my tank in the low 70's I'd take them.

If they are collecting that deep again chance's are good for some peppermints soon.

I wonder who is diving that deep? Or it could be that they were swept up and found at a shallower location than usual. There are only a handful of divers that are skilled and crazy enough to dive for Boylei's. Maybe Copps knows who is catching these anthias? Copps???? Tim

IMO, I'd much rather have an interruptus for that price! :)

I have been searching for my fav fish mentioned above, and I got a fish list recently that has Peppermints on it.........ONLY $15,000!

I would never support the purchase of one of these fish. The demand for these deep water anthias is killing more divers than imaginable. It's ridiculous to send these guys down 280 feet to catch fish!

Actually, some of them are. Heck, some are even being "held captive". The exporter possesses their passport and will not let them go home.

This is indeed Chip Boyle's group (the namesake of Centropyge boylei of course) that is getting these... and anyway... anything that comes from the Cooks is pretty much from Chip's group... $900 is actually cheaper than the wholesale price they were first offered at!

You are generalizing... Chip's group is very well trained and top notch... just because some parts of the world have those issues doesn't mean everyone has them... this is an excellent source of income and opportunity for people in locations that have little in the way of job opportunities...

Check out my new little guy! 1.75" and eating well... his dorsal is even healing!

Kevin Kohen (the director and man behind LA's Wisconsin facility and Diver's Den) is actually coming over my house tomorrow night... :)

Chip was one of the first rebreather divers among rich pyle and jack randall. He has been doing it for decades and you can be sure he has taught everything he knows to his group of divers and is well aware of the risks. Deep diving is safe as long as the divers know their limits of themselves and the rig they are using.

copps - the bandit isn't as bad as i thought! i thought it was to the back and wouldn't heal. looks like it is doing well. Im glad it still has the skunk (the coolest part of the small bandits!!)

So are Boylei's going to be collected once again? I have an expensive fish appetite, my last purchase being the most expensive, but Boylei prices are waaaaaay out of my league. It's always nice to dream right. Especially because Boylei's are known to be so difficult to maintain. I question whether they are difficult or more likely not many have had the opportunity to learn about their needs. I live in Sag Harbor NY, which is located way out on the south fork of Long Island. Yesterday was a real rainy day, so I decided to take a ride to Riverhead's Atlantis Aquarium to look at the massive reef they have. The largest I believe in N. America, and was pretty impressed, especially because an acro frag I gave to Joe (the curator and care taker of the reef) about 4 years ago is still alive and HUGE. Probably almost 4'x4'. Also amazing is the amazing amount of fish that they have in the display. Took some pics and will start a thread soon. Again thanks for the inside info Copps. If you worked on Wall Street, you would of been thrown in jail a long time ago! :). Regards, Tim

Aye, P. boylei is coming back. Chip isn't going, but his crew is. They're going in Europe (on the wait list, at least) for about â"šÂ¬12000,00 or $18,400 by today's rate. You can get one sent to you here in the states, iirc, but it'b make the fish even more costly.

What ? :D Hey Tim, all of the info I share is public... and the "insider info" that I share is not an issue... at least nothing to go to jail for or get anyone mad... it's not a big secret that Chip Boyle is the fish collector and exporter in the Cooks... what Chibilis mentions is true... there's a reason Chip himself stopped collecting them, and that price he mentions would be about what retail would be... although that is of course entirely dependent on the retailer exactly what it's set at... I know this importer in Europe, as he happens to be an angelfish nut himself... the fish is being collected on a demand rather than a supply basis, and orders are in for boylei (none for narcosis yet), but no collection yet that I've heard...

Anyway, anyone can be on that list if they have the money... even here in the states...

Zem, the shot of the bandit was a few days after it was collected, and already the dorsal was growing back... it's now even more grown... we'll see if there is a scar, but hopefully not... in the photo of its collection it was pretty deep though, but as you know collectors aren't photographers... so it was tough to tell... :)

By the way nice Bandit. John. What medications or steps are you using if any to help aid in the healing of the dorsal of the bandit? Good news my new Hawaiian Dragon finally took some tuna off of a feeding stick this afternoon.

Also. Do they have any idea of the population size of C. Boylei and how far their range is? Also any new ideas of what is making these angels so difficult to keep in captivity? Is it lack of experience? Improper diet? I assume they feed on sponge as large portion of their diet? Or is it improper de-compression? If I was coming up from that deep and had the bends I would say the hell with the fish and worry about my health. That C. Narcosis isn't named Narcosis because the diver was trying to be funny, he was dead serious!!!!! Tim
