home depot sink cabinets for a stand?

I was wondering if anyone ever used a sink cabinet from Home Depot or some store for a stand. I am buying a 40 gallon breeder that is 36" long and they have some cabinets that are 36 long and 24" wide . The exterior would be really nice. I know it would take a little reinforcing and a board for the top, but just curious if anyone has ever done it.

I haven't seen that done, but it should be fine. You'd probably not need much, if any reinforcing. You'd be surprised how much those cabinets can hold and if you look at them closely, they are probably made significantly better or at least the same as commercially made stands. It is is the right size and you can get it for less, I'd go for it.

For a forty it should be just fine. Yhe only mod you'll need is to put a top on it. I would consider screwing it to the wall to prevent possible tipping.

i have two 12" cheapo kitchen cabinets with 48" top. set up like a desk. i have had a 40g breeder filled with lr on there with no problems. also had a 30g up on it for a while. lately ive had a 10g mix tank and a 10g qt.

you will be fine. ditto, add top and screw to wall.

I would be afraid if they are partical board if there ever was a leak it could turn to mush

check out my gallery I have a 180 on them I braced them with 2x4 and 4x4 first they have been up almost 3 yrs no problems

I used a 48" wide overheight bathroom vanity for my old 120g. It was skinned in oak so I stained it black and made a canopy to match.
I have sold it now but it's still being used.

Depends on the brand. There are some ultra-cheap brands that I would not trust a tank on top of... they use particle-board sides, staples, etc.... they just arent strong enough (the unfinished pre-assempled oak comes to mind... they suck). Then there are the pre-finished like the Mill's Pride and pre-made brand that they are changing brands on. These only use 3/4" construction and connectors much like cheap sauder entertainment furniture has... I would not consider these either, as the suppport for the top board is minimal. Their other brands, and special order units are a good deal though. I have taken home a special order return/markdown unit or two for this very reason. The Kraftmaid units I have are well built and cheap (a 24x48 base with 3/4" ply sides and contemporary flush cherry doors was $50 on markdown).
