Homogeneity of zoanthid colonies

I purchased a zoanthid rock about a year and a half ago. There are many different variations in color as to skirts, rings, centers and combinations of these.

Is this the way a rock would be in the ocean? Or would one color type over run its neighbors?

I am so used to frags being one color type that I am unsure about whether to leave the rock alone or try fragging a few of the polyps.

And if fragging a type, are color variations usually this diverse? Meaning will the frag be one color type or morph into more variations?

From what I understand eventually one colony would over-run the other due to the natural aggressive growth tendancies of one type of zoa over the another- This however could take varying amounts of time, and you could find a mixed colony that has not over-run its neighbor
