Hello:

I am trying to identify the main differences between these two species of wrasses. I would like to purchase a mated pair for my sps tank and would like some clarification on their colors, habits, etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Both are excellent fish. Flames (Cirrhilabrus jordani ) are a bit more aggressive especially females. I can't really say which is better other than personal preferences. I subjectively feel that pairs of flames are more readily available than Hooded (Cirrhilabrus bathyphilus).

Personally between the 2 I think the Flame is a more stunning fish, but that is subjective. I would agree with snorvich that you would likely find flame wrasses much easier than the hooded on a regular basis, I also think the flames will be less expensive.

Yes, almost certainly flames will be less expensive. The best way to get a flame pair is get three flame females of different sizes and let the dominant one convert.

Note, that is will not work quite the same way with hooded. I have had them convert and then go backwards ending up eventually with two males.
