how can i improve my skimmer

I am currently running a CSS 220 on my 29 gallon SPS dominant reef tank. I have done the fishing line mod, and have added an air valve to the tube coming off the eductor to better control the bubble size. Really, it has never pulled a lot of skimate. The most it has ever pulled in a week is probably about an inch in the skimmer cup. However, especially lately, I am not pulling much at all. I get very little skimmate in the cup. the neck of the collection cup is gummed up like crazy by the end of the week, but not much in the cup. No matter where I set my water level, this never changes.

Anyhow, I am soon going to be upgrading to a 50 gallon, and am looking to improve my skimming. What are some things I should or could do that would help

My tank has a 2" sand bed, which i syphon regularly. I only have 2 clowns in there, and the cleanup crew. I feed my SPS twice a week, once with cyclopeeze, once with Pappone. I feed my fish every couple days with pellets (formula one) and every couple days with frozen brine shrimp. I also feed my LPS brine shrimp every few days.

I have to think i should be getting better skimmate.

All my levels are in check: nitrates, nitrites, ammonia all zero.
Calcium 450

I have thought about it, but decided against it. Basically, i have heard that it is great for a while, but you have to keep redoing it every so many months.
