How Do I Clean Up My Tank

My nano is covered in algae and aiptasia. I gave up on it months ago and haven't done anything but feed them since. After setting up my 55 gallon and seeing how nice it looks I want to do the same with my nano. How do I clean my tank up? Someone told me to boil my rock, is this a good idea?

WOW I would have to say that turbo snails and lots of them. Or Boil the heck out of them because I don't even think anyhting could help that, but this comes to mind alot of turbos and emrald crabs could really work.

I have tried tubos and crabs they don't help.

That looks like bryposis. Some reefers have had good luck with Kent Tech M. The magnesium additive has some sort of algecide and when Mag is elevated to high level it will kill bryposis. I did it in my tank and it worked well. There are some threads around about this.

If it was my tank I would do a lot of water changes and remove all my sand. I found in my nano I mas more successful going barebottom and siphoning out the fish poop weekly.

Also, I only see one fish but a low bioload is your friend in a nano.

Another option you have is to cook the rocks.

I would also add to the cleanup crew. I would caution you though, that once you get the nutrients under control you might not need a large cleanup crew. In my barebottom 34 gallon Solana I only needed 3 snails and 5 hermit crabs to keep all the alge in check. I guess any excess you can put in the 55 gallon.

Hope this helps, i'm sure you were already thinking the same things. Good luck!

I would start out with water changes and hand removal of stuff as you can get it. Might also cut out the lights for 3 days or so and see if that helps any.

I would first read this article

http://saltaquarium.about.com/cs/algaecontrol/a/aa070403.htm

First i would clean the tank, ie, scrap the glass of the coraline, at least the front lol. clean all the filteration system. basically give everything a good cleaning. then I would attack the HA per that article.

as a last resort i would cook the rock. i would try to attack the HA first by attacking its food supply. if you do end up cooking the rock i would relocate your friends in there and basically start over. drain, clean, fill, wait, move in friends again

If you have another tank up and running:
Remove all fish or any livestock that needs to be fed and put them in your new tank.

Manually remove all the algae you can, and very aggressively go after the aptasia with kalk paste.

Stop all feeding and begin doing regular water changes.

No lights and throw a towel over the tank, but be sure to let some air in so it doesn't get too low on oxygen.

Keep this up for a month or so and you'll beat it.

As someone else said, their does look to be some byropsis. Dosing Kent Tech M up to 1600 ppm or so may not be a bad idea.

If you want to kill the rock and start over you can do whatever you want to - boil it, bleach it, vinegar or muratic acid baths are all options.

If you choose bleach just put it in some clean water and a pump and add a whole bunch of de-chlorinator for a few days at least afterwords.

I would probably do a strong vinegar bath for a few days and then "cook" (not with heat) the rock for 6 weeks or so.

OK - not trying to be a wise guy - but, doesn't look like there is a lot of rock in there and I don't see any corals. I'd toss the rock and sand - give the tank a very good cleaning and start over.

That little guy just needs a good cleaning. Hand remove all you can get water changes and do some testing. then some more cleaning.....

He really does not need to start all over. Personally i'd take all the rocks out for a good scrubbing, clean the entire tank, and get a good clean up crew. Then it's all up to regular maintenance as stated above.
