summer is approaching, and so is my bday :D so my family friend decided to get me a bigger tank (46 bow front). the problem is, i dont even know how to move all my livestock into the big tank..
do i just transfer all the water and livestock into the new tank? or should i let my new tank cycle (as if its a brand new tank). please help me out here guys ><

Assuming you'll be adding additional rock, set up the tank with new substrate, or lack thereof, and the new rock. I think you'll want to wait until it's fully cycled before moving the other rock or livestock.

Get live sand from several established tanks. friends or pet stores. run some extra powerheads or pumps on a loop on your nano for 1 week. Take the live sand, the used equipment and live rock and put it in your new tank. ta-da! no cycle! The bacteria in the pumps and sand will heavily seed your new set up. Why would any one want to wait for a tank to cycle?

spaceace, what do u mean "run some extra powerheads or pumps on a loop on your nano..."? do u mean i should pump the water in my nano into the new tank?!

Why would any one want to wait for a tank to cycle?

To avoid the ammonia, nitrite, nitrate cycle from killing your livestock ??

He's going from a 12 gallon to a 46 bowfront. Unless the new tank isn't going to have more live rock there is the possibility of a cycle. Increased water flow doesn't minimize any type of cycle, it just increases the flow.

IKU, are you going to add more rock ?

Then cycle the tank first.

Good Luck and post pics :D .

Happy Birthday

got my bow front yesterday!!! yahoooooooooo!!!
well, i already spray painted the back black.. but its too bright to take quality pictures.. so i'll post pics later!! :D

Iku, you can choose whether you want to cycle the 46 or not.

As Agu suggested you can setup the 46 just like any brand new tank and let it cycle for a couple months then think of your 12g as a fish store :) it's the place you go to get livestock for your 46.

If you'd rather not keep 2 tanks up for so long you can also set up the 46 with just powerheads, heater, water and substrate and then move everything (including the water) from the 12 into the 46 as soon as it is up to temp. You will essentially have a 12 gallon tank in a 46 gallon enclosure. As long as the new substrate doesn't have any biological detritus in it you won't see any kind of cycle. If you get live sand it can be problematic because there will undoubtedly be die-off which will cause a cycle.

The only problem with this approach is that you will have to be careful about adding liverock. It will have to be fully cured live rock. I like this approach because you can buy really nice large pieces of mushroom rock, gsp rock, zoanthid rock etc. to make up the additional LR you want in the 46. You cannot add uncured or base rock to the tank it will cause a cycle!

You are able to do this because you are not adding any biological load to the bio-filtration that your currently well balanced tank has. It is important that the 46 doesn't have anything in it (ammonia, detritus in re-used sand, biological die off in uncured or partially cured live rock etc.) that would upset this balance. The additional water and the glass itself will quickly colonize with bacteria and the substrate will colonize pretty quickly.

The other risk is if you have a really dirty substrate in your 12 this getting stirred up could unbalance the biological load in the tank.

wow, dantodd, thnx for the detailed information.. that was exactly what i needed!! (sorry i was away for the weekend, i went to my graduation party!!! prom!!!) anyways, i have no problem buyin fully cured LR, so i think i'll go with the second approach (of just dumping my 12 gallon into the 46 right after the temp is right). today i just bought my return pump and a ciphon overflow~ and so all i need now is.. how to design how the pipes and how all the plumbing will go.. :| pictures will defeinitely help me guys >< (i'm still very rusty with doing things by myself)

no prob iku. But keep in mind what agu said. You want to think of the 46 as an overpopulated 12. You only have the bio filtration of the 12 to work with so go slow with adding much. Be sure that any new rock is really fully cured. I think that if you get large rocks that are sold as zoanthid or mushroom rock you'll get better rock and usually a much better deal.

I'd probably spend the $75. It's less than 20% increase and will always look "right" on your tank.... The 24" will always look a little wrong every time you look at it, unless you build a canopy around it but that will cost more than $75 and defeats the purpose of buying a complete hood instead of DIYing.....

alright, i'll spend the extra money then.. however i'm at my last stage of connecting my pipes together, but i dont know how to drill/cut glass.. i need to connect my inlet (for return pump) into the sump/refugium.. so does anyone have any advices on how to cut/drill glass?!?

pictures as promised.. i've used cement glue to attach the pipes to prevent leaking o.O. any suggestions are welcomed :)

(still need to divide + drill the sump/refugium)
and finally... the return pump (PS2, rated at 900gph)

looks sweet man do u have the tank running yet. how is that pump? I was going to get a Mag 7 but I like the idea of putting the pump on the outside plus it will be cooler. what are you rockin out for lights. i have a 36G bow front with a 250W DE MH on it 14K. looks sweet so far.

hey mx, i just dropped my refugium/sump tank to a local glass shop to have the hole drilled.. so i havn't started runnin the tank yet. however, i'm about to go purchase the aqualight pro unit (250watt with 2 36 watt true actinics).. and hopefully that's enough lighting to keep everything happy :)
