how do soft coral reproduce? do they divide or split

Numerous ways, depending on the species (and even then, most soft corals in the hobby use a variety of methods).
Branchlet dropping, laying down new tissue growth, dividing off a portion of their tissue (sometimes the whole colony can split in half). Asexual planulae (I think softies use this) and sexual reproduction, which is by far the least common and least successful form of captive reproduction.
