How do you stay connected to your Profilux?

I am curious on how people stay connected to their Profilux. E-mail alerts via serial cable? Or Ethernet? Access from software on their client PC away from home (work, laptop)? Or the iPhone ap? Or via browser using DynDns or some similar service? or a web site that can scrape your data? Or some other unique process?

Also: the GHL web site states the following is a feature: "Web monitoring (reef status free software)." Does anyoine know what this means or what software is being referenced?

I use a couple of methods personally...

To start I have my Profilux connected to my home network via an ethernet cable, I will soon be setting up a web page on the integrated web server of the profilux 3 that my own web site can pull data from.

In the mean time however I have my PC logged on to my profilux all the time via the default GHL software with Email alerts configured to e-mail my phone through an SMS server.

In the even of a problem i log on to my PC over the internet using remote desktop (VNC also works for this). Remote desktop is integrated into most pro version of Windows XP/Vista/7 and allows you to control your entire desktop as though you sitting at home. I use DynDNS to keep my hostname easy to find as my internet provider uses Dynamic IP adresses.

Reef Status is a handy third party application that was devolped to do some neat graphing and data logging, but by no means essential

Thx GD!

I only have a PII, so I don't have the option of the web server available.

I also set up my PII (via Ethernet) to provide scheduled alerts, and well as send alerts to my phone via text message and e-mail when system alert conditions exist. I just e-mail to my AT&T phone number, and it generates a text message.

Remote desktop... good idea! Did not know that Microsoft bundled it within Windows!

I found Reef Status on the web... looks pretty handy as a web-based viewer of status.

Anyone using the iPhone ap? Or other aps?

What about MarineMad.com for creation of those handy forum signatures?

I'm using the iPhone app. It rocks! Gary who developed it is a great guy, and is constantly striving to improve his product. I can check the status o fmy reef anywhere with a cell connection, and remotely start a thunderstorm

The Reef Status application with its web interface looks like a good alternative for me. I don't use an iPhone, and my work desktop is pretty locked down. So, using that app with e-mail and text alerts should be a good combo.

I tried MarineMad but their web site is too cryptic and nobody appears to be home. :)

I have a Profilux II Plus, connected directly to my router. I use then a MAC MINI with Parallels and XP with Reefstatus.

Reefstatus is setup to send me an email every 6 hours on the current status. Additionally it sends reminder emails or in case of an alarm.

From any other pc like from work or laptop in a hotel I can check the status and graphs. It is also nice to view the graph for a specific trend in temp. or pH etc. Additionally I use my iphone to do the same thing.

Marinemad is also setup but logs just every 15 minutes. This is my backup in case I cannot log into Reeftatus via my router from outside because Marinemad logs the data and sends it to another server from where you can read the data.

At the moment I am looking for a way to get an SMS when I have an alarm instead of an email ??????

Chris I'm sure you've already looked into this but just in case. . . most cellular carriers make provisions so you can send an SMS via your email client so you should be able to do something similar with this. For instance . . . on my network our UPS is connected to the system and set-up to send an email for power errors and in the case of a shut-down it sends one upon power-up. I put my cell # in as the email addy like this (I'm with Verizon and of course I'm using BOGUS digits here):

8281234567@vtext.com

what this does is send the alarm/alert to my phone as a SMS as long as it's not longer than 160 characters. Anything longer gets "Truncated".

I'm sure there is a better way but this one works for my particular arrangement even though my example isn't tank related... yet :)

BigAl2007, thanks I have heard of this but never really tried or even find out if my service provider "T-mobile" Austria do this. Will check it out tonight and hope to set it up.

I think I def need to get a LAN expansion as I can NOT stay connected using USB no matter what I do..

hmmm that's strange... Mine will stay connected indefinitely over the USB/RS232 connection. Are you getting any "Errors"? Any problems with other USB devices on the same USB port?

No this is the only device ever attached to this USB port. I have no problems with anything else I use. Mines a PII ex... Running the latest software/firmware also.

hmm I dunno. I'm running the PII+ but not the EX. I'm running the USB/RS232 interface so you may be running yours differently. Wish I could help but I'm just learning (slowly at that) myself.

Yea its def a bummer one of the main reasons I went with this controller was for email/text updates... With it not staying connected non of that works for me???????????

I used to run the serial cable, then to a 25 foot extension, and finally connected to a PC with a serial-to-USB converter from ebay. Worked fine.
