How long is live rock...alive?

Im waiting for 100 pounds of Live Rock that the LFS is bringing in. It;s been delayed at the border for 10 days now...will there be anything alive on it or is it basically baserock now?

It really depends on whether it is shipped in water, or just damp. But Either way there will be a lot of die off. But it will still be somewhat alive. Weather to use it or not depends on whether you are just setting up a tank, or adding to an existing.

A friend and I moved a 150 last year. The live rock it contained sat in covered plastic trash cans with damp rags wrapped around each rock for about 6 weeks in his garage while we rebuilt the stand and reworked the filtration.
When we opened the cans some of the rocks and rags had some mold growth on them. We scrubbed them in saltwater, put them in the tank and filled it up.
It took some time, but today there is nice coralline growth all over the rocks and everything is doing well.

Then its going to be perfect, and will cycle. You're just fine! :)

Well, I respectfully disagree. It may still work, but it is not the desired situation, and certainly, imho, not perfect. Why buy this rock? I don't view the die-off and possibly longer cycle as desirable. I would want the good creepy-crawly thingies on the rock. Yup, thats right, the thingies!

It's all going in a new tank.

Been_There8, I believe that this a statement about the future and not a comment about what has already happened. I didn't read: It already went into the tank...He posted here to ask our opinion...IMO we should give our opinion, not simply try help him deal with the situation, if it can be avoided altogether.

Hopefully he hasn't paid for the rock yet, and can refuse the shipment/delivery from the LFS.
