How long to run cannister on main tank to seed.

Do you mean running a previously established canister filter on a new tank? Is so, depends on the bio-load. Also, the bacteria are not just going to bail out of the canister and take up residence in the new tank, that will take time. If there is no hurry, and if the bio-load is low, I would keep the canister on at least 6 weeks and then spot check for ammonia after you pull it.

I plan on using it for a QT setup. So I dont expect the bacteria to leave the canister, I hope it stays IN the canister :)

I was going to run it on my main tank then move it to a new QT with a small fish.

So you really think 6 weeks?

Oh, I see - you are talking about "charging" the canister filter with bacteria by running it on an established tank and then switching it over to your QT set-up....

We keep sponge filters and canisters running on tanks all the time, and then just swap them out onto the new tank when needed. They are all VERY well broken in.

Sorry, I don't know how quickly the process can be made to work, and I don't want to take a guess and cause your QT to mess up.....

No problem, I think I will go with 4 weeks. I think it will be more than enough time.

P.S. - I still need to get your book!
