I'm in the same boat as you but i want to do reef. I think 2 would leave a big gap with no light or dark spots. I thing you at least need 3 to illuminate the whole tank.
you can go two Maxspect G2-170 they're 32" fixtures so should cover your 72" length tank pretty well i have two on my 84" long tank and it covers the whole tank without much of dead spot.
I've got 2 400W MH's now, and am trying to save money on bulbs/energy. Used to do reef, but havent been able to put in the time recently, will likely go back to reef in the future. I also like the shimmer.

3 would work on FOWLR. Mount them at least 12" above water line to get full coverage. I have 4 on a 180 reef and mounted 14" above waterline. I only keep leathers and softies with a couple of LPS. Mine run at 70%w, 50%B and 45%RB.
