How Many Firefish?

I got a 40 breeder cycling right now and deciding on what fish to put in it. I would like to put 2-3 firefish in it but don't know if that will work. Has any body tried this many in this size of a tank and what would you suggest? I have 44lbs. of live rocks which there is 16 pieces of rocks.

From what I've been reading it will only work with a male and female. If you get 2 males, one will kill the other.

Two of the same sex will in the long run, kill one.

If you can't buy an already mated pair, has anyone had any success sexing them? I looked this up a while ago on the web, and there wasn't too much information. I too would like to add a firefish to my 90g. Mine used to be out all the time, but migrated to the other side of the tank, and is now pretty shy.
I was hoping another one would promote him coming out of his shell.

I have kept small groups together in my personal tanks and some customer tanks with no real harm but these were 150-250 gallon tanks with loads of rock and hiding places and all were placed in at same time
