How many fish in QT tank?

Hi folks. I have an outbreak of ICK in my 140g DT. I've tried letting in run its course ensuring excellent water params, nutritious food, Selcon and garlic...fish still have signs of ICK. This has been going on for 2+ months. I want to remove all the fish, treat them and leave the tank without fish for 6+ weeks to break the ICk cycle.

Here is my (additional) problem. My QT tank is only 20 gal. I have a 3 in Powder Brown, 2 in Kole eye, 3 in Foxface, 5 in Christmas wrasse, 3 full grown clowns, dottyback and a mandarin. I can't imagine puttting all those fish in a 20 gal QT tank. What do the rest of you do in a similar situation? I've considered asking my LFS to help me with the QT'ing...but would certainly be interested in others methods.

Many thanks.

I'd at least go with a 50 gallon setup... maybe a large Rubbermaid tub if u can't afford a 55 gallon

i would recommend something larger. Try to get a tank vs. a rubbermaid purely for the fact that you will need to observe the tank inhabitants during treatment . glass = clear :). GL

Storage containers come in clear, too. I bought some from Lowes that are 30 gallon and cost $12.00.

I actually bought 3, one being a longer, less wide one for doing the tank transfer method. I also have 2 29 G glass QT tanks.

Just my opinion, but clear plastic tubs on the floor are so much easier to work with. Lighter, easier to clean, and harder to break, and who doesnt need another storage bin?

Clear storage containers that's what they use at some of the lfs around here. Seems to be pretty convenient nice and lightweight.

What kind of clear containers are you using? I would be worried they could hold the weight of water for any duration of time.

Just any clear storage container from a home improvement store. Some are thicker than others. Mine have been holding water for 6 weeks now. I do have a tie-band to keep the top from widening. Think zip ties but they are 36" long for the HVAC field/ductwork. I have used a clamp before, as well.

I have 2 QTs, a 37 and a 20L. Maybe your lfs will lend you a couple of 20 or 29 gallon tanks (or a couple of 10s) so you can put 2-3 fish in each QT. If not, I would use a mix of buying another QT and storage containers. As suggested, perhaps you can find something on Craig's list or maybe Petco will have their $1 per gallon sale. You are going to need filtration, water movement and heaters - sponges, air pumps and powerheads.

To me, it will be easier to manage water quality in 20-29 gallon containers with water changes than in a 55 gallon, plus you don't know whether you will need multiple containers in case some fish don't react well to medication. However, a larger container will have the advantage of needing only a single filter, a single heater, etc.

Good luck.
