I'm collecting Duncans corals and was wondering how many species are there? I believe I have three different species, maybe someone can correct me. One kind of Duncan I have, have long brown tentacles, the other ones have short purple color tentacles and the other ones i have, they have round ball tentacles.
sorry if i'm asking a newbie question.
thanks for your help.

As far as I know, there is only one species in the genus: Duncanopsammia axifuga. You have three color varieties, though :)

Probably depends on a variety of things like lighting, feeding, etc. Consider for example Frogspawn comes in pink, green, purple, green and purple, pink and green, etc.

I just aquired a 5 head duncan that came from ORA, its a bright green, but I have seen others that have yellow and purple as well but who knows what is real and what is just trick photography to get you to order it.
As for the coral itself, where do people generally keep them? Ive got mine about half way down a 40 breeder with a single 250w pendant. Hopefully its not to much light ..

I've seen some really nice bright green ones high up in an SPS tank under metal halides. Even the skeleton was really green.

ORA = Oceans, Reefs and Aquariums... its a wholesaler out of florida..

1 species currently recognized.

Ive seen at least 4 color morphs of Duncan, arguably as many as 6.

I power feed mine every day and it grows like nuts. I am sure most are like this so there should be plenty of frags some day...

By power feed I mean that I feed it every day at 12:30 in the afternoon using the same stuff that I feed my fish with. After about 2 weeks of doing this I have 5 new heads beginning to pop out of the Duncan pictured above.

I feed with a turkey baster and stick the tip very gently into the Duncan. It proceeds to wrap around the baster. I then squirt a decent amount of the mixture below into it's mouth. I make sure that my power heads are off until it is done digesting the food. Inject a decent amount but not too much or it will just spit all of the food out.

I mix tank water, vitachem (5 drops), chromoplex (10 drops), cyclopeze (frozen), brine shrimp (frozen), and ground up vege pellets. I let this mixture thaw for 5-10 minutes before I start to feed my fish and corals.

I use this same "power feeding" method on my bubble and frogspawn corals with great results.

Just for reference, here's mine, its basically just like any other.. I would like to know where to get a couple different colors, but havent found much other than the standard green from places I would trust..
