How much flow do you have?

I'm scratching my head. Do I have to much flow or not enough.

I would like to hear from you guys on your tank size. What kind of return pump and the flow it produces. Also what kind of power heads do you use and how many?

60 cube,

Return Pump:
rated for 800 but im sure its more like 700GPH with pressure.

Powerhaeds
2x 545GPH
1x 750GPH

If i had a larger sump i would have way more flow on the return.

Two 6105's 6800gph
Two 6255's 9600gph
Fluval SP6 3400gph

Total flow 19,800gph

Tank size 470 gallons

42 times turnover

Lol...
Not as dramatic as it sounds
The 90, the gyre is set on pulse around 50%.
The MP60 is set on around 30% constant.
But every 13 minutes, for two minutes, it kicks into a six second pulse mode at 50% or so.
On the 40 breeder, the 3k gyre runs in the pulse mode, 6 seconds, and the pulse keeps increasing to about 60%, then decreases back to 20%, then starts the whole thing over.
The MP40'S spin at 10 or 15% constant for 13 minutes, then for two minutes have a six second pulse at 50%.
Trying to go for the waves lapping at the beach, then every 13 minutes a "set" comes in. It's just enough with the "sets" to stir the sand in some spots, but no sand storms. Corals seem to like it. Fish too.
I think it may be time to bump the percentages up a little bit though.
Crappy pic of the 40 breeder. 2 40's on the right, 1 on the left. One on the lift runs in antisync from the two on the right when they're in pulse mode.
Sps are about 14 months old, all were frags.

You guys are killing me. Maybe I have been in this hobby for so long, I'm old school. I used to argue with Farmer about this subject.

Number one. I can not imagine just one mp40 in a 40 breeder. You stated,On the 40 breeder, the 3k gyre runs in the pulse mode, 6 seconds, and the pulse keeps increasing to about 60%, then decreases back to 20%, then starts the whole thing over. The MP40'S spin at 10 or 15% constant for 13 minutes, then for two minutes have a six second pulse at 50%.

Why so many large pumps at a low percent? Why not fewer pumps and smaller size at a higher percent flow rate? I mean one mp40 could rock the crap out of a 40 breeder.

Because
1. I'm going for more of a "mass flow", as opposed to a "hard stream". During the lull period, there is nice, pretty even whole (though low) flow throughout the tank. (I think the flow would be Reefslug -approved). And when they do their thing for two minutes, the whole mass of water moves rather evenly. Believe me, if there was a way I could get a true standing wave to move across the tank without half of said tank's volume ending up on the floor, at the other end, I'd do it.

And
2. Because the MP40's are the pumps I have. lol

Also why does everyone use mp40's when you can't aim them? But the Tunze 6105 can be aimed.
Like I said, they're the pumps I have. Invested in them pretty heavily over the years, and they do the job. Finally have figured out how to do some advanced programming with them via the Apex. That said, any pumps purchased from here on out, will probably be either Tunzes or Maxspect gyres. Although there's a couple of interesting low profile /wide flow pumps showing up all of a sudden.
And I'm with ya- MH/VHO and T5's, MTC venturi skimmer. Old school. Heck, I think I'm probably the only person left who still buys the Maxi-Jet Mods from Premium Aquatics.

Maybe you should look at tanks that you want your tank to look like and then follow their lead. Why argue with people about the amount of flow they have in their successful reef tank?

I personally have a dislike of corals look long and spindly because they are growing in very little flow.

my 225 has
2 icecap 3k
2 mp 60's
2 mp40's
with a dc9000 on a seaswirl and the small vectra split 4 ways

the 300dd
5 gyre 250's
1 mp 60

Wanting to add 2 mp40s

The frag tang which is about 5 foot x 2 x around 16" tall running 4 gyre 200's

Flow Flow FLow!!!

I should have started this thread with how much flow in a mixed reef tank. So you think my tank would do better with more

Darrell, I don't think the mixed reef you have needs ton of flow like most SPS tanks do. You have a beautiful display and if it works, don't fix it. The Gigantea loves strong, indirect current.
