How much is a used 100 gallon tank worth?

My friend has a used 100 gallon tank in good condition that he is trying to sell. A lady offered 30 dollars for it, and I don't think that is a fair price. I just don't know what a fair price is. Thanks guys!!

I would say probably around $125 or so. I have a 100g with stand and canopy I am putting in the garage sale for $200 (it's been used hard, lol).

A wise aquarium store guy once told me, as long as the tank is in decent condition then its a dollar a gallon. You then adjust if it was a high dollar tank, has a stand etc. I would say 175-200 is right on.

I've seen used tanks go from $2-$3 per gallon on average. If you can find a tank that is $1/gallon, then you are getting a great deal. Anything cheaper, and the seller is getting ripped off (and the buyer is getting a steal)

sorry to say this, but if your silicone is not so well endowed, hehe, then it only costs 3.98 at lowes for a tube of silicone, but if its okay, tell the lady to get the heck outta town!!!! j/k, i have been drinkin, but seriously, listen to these guys!!!!

My general rule of thumb is that most used aquarium equipment is worth no more than 50% of the cost of a new unit. With tanks of indeterminate age, that is the max I'd pay. If the thing has been sitting without water for more than a year, I wouldn't touch it at all (silicone ages very badly if left dry).

For a 100 gallon, non-reef ready glass tank, $100-125 would be a fair price if in good condition.

As for the $2-3 per gallon for a used tank, you can get a brand new non-RR tank for ~$2 a gallon.

Because there is no way to tell how much life is left in an aquarium or how well it was treated particularly how the seams were treated, I would not pay much at all for a used aquarium. I usually give any old aquariums away that I get b/c that is the only way to make it worth having and repairing. I would not want to pay anything like $100 for a used aquarium b/c time is money and if it needed any work it would increase the over all opportunity cost which is the real issue between the cost of new and used.

except when it comes to Tunze streams...they sell for 75-80% of the new price even 2 years old!!!

But yeah, $1 a gallon is cheap but as Tim said, more than $2/gallon approaches the new price for some tanks (55 gallon = 119.99, 120= 279.99 etc). You have to factor condition and features (holes? Overflows? etc) into it as these are major factors. Used tanks can be a steal if you know the seller and the history of the tank but often I see them going for way more than they should be.
