how much light for lords and micros...

I am wanting to set up a pico tank with two catalina gobies and would like to have a really cool micro and a lord in there...just wondering if under 9 watts they can live? Thanks guys, I have them in my display, but that is halide lighting, I have never done my research enough on these...Thanks.

I know this is in the LPS forum but I wanted to ask if you knew about catalina gobies? They are a colder water species and really technically should probably be put in a tank that's chilled down to below what we'd keep corals at from warmer waters.

Just some food for thought while planning this out. Awesome and viable options would be trimma gobies, clown gobies, gumdrop goby, highfins or maybe yashia depending on the size of the tank.

Also make sure you keep any goby with a lid as they are curious and tend to want to explore- unfortunately even without the water.

I think some gobies and an awesome frag or few of acans and micros would look nice.

I'd aim for at least 13-18W if you can 9W would be like one bulb.

What size tank are you thinking of trying for this?

Thanks for the heads up on the gobies, but I know this...that is why I want a small species specific tank that I can have chilled to where they will be able to be sustained long term...Although this is a new question about the micros and lords, I have been in the hobby for a very long time, so I am pretty up to date on the fish...I am pretty sure that the lords can handle 9w's of light, the more the better I know, but I thought I would ask and get a general feel for it...

As for size of tank it will be a 3 gallon with a bio wheel filter, and people please no comments on them being nitrite traps, it will be fine for LPS and two fish and is one of the best options for this size of a tank...

I actually run a biowheel on picos that small.

What are you planning on chilling it with? something 1\20 sized?

I've got mushrooms that survive under 13W of light and 1 polyp of a zoa (laugh) but they don't really grow or spread very much. I'd think you *may* be able to do it with lps but you may come to rely more on feeding. It would definitely be an interesting experiment, I'm curious to see how this tank goes so please keep us updated!

You could target feed the lords or micros to supplement. If they don't have enough light, food should make up for it.

I will keep you update for sure... I am chilling it with a chiller/heater combo Pacific Coast CL-85 chiller...

That is what I was thinking and will regular water changes I should be ok...

Well you are set to go! If you can, pls post pics of the tank with the acans and the fish, I'd like to see these catalina gobies.

Good luck!

^ Heck I bought one of those Catalina's without even knowing what their requirements were....the LFS folks didn't tell me either.(the owner wasn't there, so maybe they didn't know?) Well it's been about 2 months now and he's still doing fine! I swore I read somewhere that tank-raised ones can adapt to higher temps than the wild ones....:bum:

Some may adapt....They can usually make to 6 months and then they can not go any longer...what is your temp in your tank?

Look like you already had it figured out before you posted ;)

I just wanted a little reassurance i guess...

Sounds like you are not planing running the tank in the mid to upper 60s. They won't last very long above that.

about 70-72 degrees....

Ok. Will lords or other corals we commonly keep make it at those temps? Maybe some of the gorgonians, anemones, or corals found off the West coast. I'm not sure if they can be collected though.

They should be ok... as for west coast stuff, the waters are not 72 degrees, they are low to mid 60's and that is in cali waters...

Yes. That's why I posted those links. Those are the temps that the Catalina gobies thrive in. it may be an expensive tank to run at those temps though.
