i was wondering how much phyto yall are useing. like size of tank, daily or every other day, what kind of phyto...blah blah blah.

thanks
Bil

I use WAY more than most people do. I have a 29g tank with a 10g sump. After water displacement of rocks and other stuff, I might only have about 30g of total water volume. I have LOADS of feather dusters, 'pods, and other things that eat Phyto, so I manage to dose about 5 fl oz every other day of home culutred Nannochloris at a density of 61.4 million cells per ml.

i use tetraselmis, Nannochloropsis, and some strain i cultured from DT's. i do about a cup every other day. i mix a little of the 3 to make a cup. im not as far in depth as travis but i do know all my phyto is 2 cm before i think about splitting my culture.

I dose my 55g with about 1/2 - 1 cup per day, nannochloris with cell density of 61.4 million/ml.

I dose heavily, for the benefit of pods, crocea, feather dusters, and anything else that wants it.

I recommend starting at about 1/4 cup per day and work your way up from there. I've seen your tank and I think this would work for ya. If you do not have alot of filter feeders that will utililize the phyto and just trying to increase pods, then every other/couple days would suffice.

all tanks, even my quarenteen tank! i make way too much for me so every tank gets some. how's everything look adam?

actually jpitts, I havn't even got em going yet. Had to use my water I had ready to acclimate a buttload of corals after the meeting. Soooo, should be getting them going tonight.

the GSP's havn't opened up yet, but I'm used to them taking a week or so to start opening and usually another week before I see em greening up. But once they hit that point, it's a battle to keep em in check, lol.

sorry to confuse! i didnt clarify, i use 1 cup each on my 180 and 105, the quarenteen gets a couple caps full.

i actually just moved everything out of the 105 so i cant really say its a tank. if you know anyone that needs a 105 ( not reef ready ) send them my way!

I use DTs and dose as follows:

55G Tank -- approx 65G Water -- 2 caps DTs, 2-4 times a week
101G System -- apprix 85G Water -- 3 caps DTs, 2-4 times a week

cool. i used to use DTs so i am use to doseing it in caps. with the idea of going to cups i was thinking the salinty would slowly rise. but i guess every month or so i will just pull out a little tank water and drop in some ro/di water.

Bill, I see my salinity rise a smidge in my smaller 20g and 2.5g but in my 55g, it's really not a big issue due to water volume. My next water change rights it all. Ya'll have to remember that DT's is extremely concentrated when compared to home cultured phytoplankton. So 1 Cup of Nannochloris isn't near the amount as a capful of DT's. It seems like a lot, but it really isn't. Once you get the culture going, try using a salinity matching your tank's SG and see if the culture handles that okay. I have cultured at 1.023 before, but never bothered to try it at 1.026 yet. I'm fairly confident that Nannochloris would culture fine under this condition. It seems pretty forgiving that way.

I have a 240 gallon w/sump and I use 6 caps of DTs (all water levels have been great & I only have had to do one 10 gallon water change in 5 months)and all my critters are happy (I use phytofeast & frozen cyclopees).
Must confess, I purchase my products in a bottle from LFS! BUT, when I am able to return to my hobby (in about a year or so) I am going to attempt to do some "home-grown" things! I didn't know about this site until last month...and what a joy it has been since then...lots of info/pics/helpful peeps!
