Hi, Im setting up a new system and would like to know how noisy is this PS and if it is, what would be your recomendation for a totally silent HOB that can do the job in a 50G tank?. Thanks

Hello,

I have been running the 800S for sometime now. The only thing you do hear is the unit pulling in air, even with the silencer, you still hear it pulling air. IMO, I don't think you are going to find a dead silent HOB skimmer. They all are going to make noise, weather it be the air intake or chopping bubbles, or the humming of a pump.

FWIW, the fans on my fixture are just as loud. Everything seems to blend together after awhile...

My setup is in the living room as well. Doesn't bother the misses either!

HTH,

Brad

Thanks Nereaga. Let me ask you, how big is your tank and, are you happy with this skimmer?; Im ready to buy it but to hear more comments is always good.

I have a 50g breeder, sumpless right now but I am adding a 10g sump to it when I get back from vacation at the end of the month. It is the best HOB skimmer I have had to date. Before I had a Aqua C Remora that was junk and really loud too.

The 800S is a beast with skimming my tank, get tons of junk in the collection cup. I will warn you that it takes a good 2 weeks to break in. Make sure you keep the collection cup raised up high during this period until it is fully broken in. If its too low when it is not broken in, and the skimmate is inconsistent, the cup COULD overflow. The pump on this skimmer is rated too big for the neck of the collection cup. The pump is kick *** though. I has not had any issues with overflowing after the break in period.

the SWC extreme hob is a much better designed skimmer which can handle 1000lph air injection, but it is more expensive.
also the WM H2X would be excellent for that size tank...
both those skimmers would be better than the octo bh-800.

the octo bh-800 is decent if you mod the pump by taking a row of pins off the impeller, then you get about 500-600 going through that neck, which is much more controllable/adjustable.
