The pump should be cleaned every 3-6 months (as should EVERY pump in your system) for best longevity and performance. Pumps will build up Ca deposits from the higher relative heat inside of the pump. Heat causes Ca to precipitate out of the water
The Skimmer body should be cleaned when it's dirty. I've seen skimmers that have run for a year that look like they went in last week, and I've seen skimmers that need cleaned monthly. In our GH, where the skimmers are in the sun, they need cleaned every other week from all of the coralline algae that grows in them.
I've been doing every six mos. The walls of the body were really "oily" for lack of a better word.
I didn't disassemble my pumps, I just had them run in 2:3 vinegar and RODI for about an hour. The output was noticeably higher than when it started too!
