How to attach plankton netting to PVC

Hello all,

I recall reading this at some point but I can't place where. Does anyone know how to attach plankton netting to PVC? I have some 53 um netting that I am trying to attach to a 4" PVC pipe for a rotifer sieve.

On a similar note, I purchased a 53 um rotifer sieve from an aquaculture supply company and regular water from the tap or anything I pour through it takes about an hour to filter a quart or so. Any thoughts? It has been this way from the time I have received it. I have tried to clean with boiling water and vinegar but without luck. I think that they might have sent me the wrong screen size.

Any help is appreciated.

Take care,

Jamison

 I believe your problem is you are using the screen dry, as you can see it doesn't work so well that way. Larger mesh OK but not 53. There is air trapped in the mesh and the best way is to blast water thru it with one of those spray nozzels at the kitchen sink. Once you blow it out water should pass right through.

As for making a collector with pvc it can be as simple as holding it in place with a rubber band and then wrapping electrical tape around it. Or you can stretch the sreen over a jar or something that is larger than the pvc, hold it in place with a rubber band and try to stretch it as tight as you can. Then run a bead of pvc glue along the edge of the pvc pipe and set it on the screen, wait 20 minutes or so. Trim the screen to about 1/2" beyond the pipe and fold it down glueing it to the pipe. Even better, before you start cut 1/2" off the pipe. Make a mark or look at the writing on the pipe so you can line the two pieces back up later. Glue the screen to the longer piece as described above and then glue the short piece back in place. Now you can trim the excess screen off flush. There are at least 20 other ways to do it.

Thanks David! I figured it was that easy, I just wanted to make sure with the experts.

I figured out what is wrong with my current sieve, they sent me a 10 um rather than the 53 um that I ordered. No wonder nothing goes through it.

Hmm... well look at it this way, if you can find a use for the 10 and paid for a 53, you got a hell of a deal!!! :D
