how to do return and flow

i am planning for a new 6L x 3W x 2H tank. it is glass and will have a black back.
i intend to do an internal calfo/overflow in black acrylic.
the question is what to do about flow and teh return.

i like a sparse look and this sort of implies no powerheads. i've seen flow
systems where the flow comes out in a closed loop configuration (4-6 heads)
but is fed by pipes under the sand bed. this seems a good look and provides
good flow. the main question is how to get the flow down to teh sand bed.

the best thought i've had is to do the return through the overflow (so nothing
protudes over the top of the tank rim) and down to the sand bed, disguising
it with an irregular column of rock glued to the downtube. aside from that,
my intent is to maintain a circular gyre, although i've seen a scheme where
there is simply a bunch of vertical orifices producing a number of "mushroom"
upwellings which apparently worked well.

i'd really prefer not to drill teh bottom of teh tank. i am reluctant to drill teh lower part
of teh back wall, but could.

finally, i was intending to use 1in pipes for the beananimal drain and for the return.
this seems to be enough; any comments? am i missing anything here?
(this is my first tank i get to drill!)
