I hear the saying " if you want to make a million in aquaculture, start with two million' far too often. I haven't been in the industry long enough to be able to give or take credit to its validity, but I have been in long enough to make things relatively easy, and cheep.
I would like to use this thread to make collection of techniques that we have developed that make aspects of aquaculture easier; the tricks of the trade.
To start, i am breeding dwarf seahorses and peppermint shrimp.
To supplement their diet I am rearing harpacticoid copepods.
I do this by taking my water change water, placing it into water bottles. I place the bottles near a window. I feed detritus from my system when available, or algae paste and fish flake.
I currently have 57 bottles running with three different copepods, and I feed one bottle per day from each strain.
each bottle produces roughly 40-200 visible larvae.
as i get more water and water bottles, i may grow more copepods, eventualy i may have enough to wear i supplement the copepods with BBS in stead of the other way around.
This cost me 0$ and is very good for the larvae. I have the algae paste mixed up in advanced, and just squirt 5-6 drops a week. In some of the bottles i have chaeto to help with water quality.
