How to make zoanthids spread

So have a few colonys here and there of zoanthids but i have a problem...they dont spred out. They overgrow each other and grow up and get long and it just looks bad(they look like tree trunks spreading up). Is there anyway to make them spread on to a plug or anything?(like GSP does it lays across the plugs)

Zoas love being cooked by light and GSP is not usually a big fan of intense light. Either move them to the top of your tank, or upgrade your light.

I would find out what is wrong before moving them closer to the light. As zoas typically dont require a ton if light.

i dont think its lighting beacuse i have them on the very bottom of the tank...they grow like weeds and i think they are out growing other polys of itself....they are under 2 250w hallides and 2 t-5s

i also have other colonies down on the bottom that are perfect

Two much flow? They might not want to expand their colonies if there is too much flow keeping them in. It also takes a while for them to settle in a system before they really take off.

^ This. How long have you had these zoas? If they are new, you will need to give them time.

they've been there for about since the begining of summer...the flow isnt bad where they are either...would it matter if it was 2 differnet colonies stuck together...its whammin watermelons and a pink zoanthid

Zoanthids from different parts of the world, ones of different color morphs, etc may have different preferences of light and flow. IMO the ones you described that are stretching and growing tree like are reaching for light,You could take a few pics and post your question in the zoanthid forum someone there may have experience with your particular situation.

It sounds like they are growing just not in the way you want them to. Let them grow and then cut and frag them accordingly. Put them on rocks that can easily be removed and broken apart. Place those pieces on the plugs. Rubble/thin Rock works well.

How about a pic of what your talking about. I re-read your post and correct me if i'm wrong but your asking how to get them to grow on other things like frag plugs rocks etc. If this is your question you need to stick a piece of rock or rubble next to them and eventually they will grow on it or you can carefully use a razorblade and remove a section and glue it to a frag plug or whatever you want. If you've never done this before it takes paitence and practice. This hobby is all about being paitent...
