How to use carbon with ozone

What is the way to put carbon on protein skimmer discharge when using ozone in reef tank

Many people, including myself, put the carbon into a nylon mesh type bag and hang it from the outflow of the skimmer. The system I have it running in is a large sump and I have let the carbon go long enough where it was without a doubt exhausted and I am debating if I will even bother with the carbon directly on the outflow next time around.
