hydnophora and monti

i was thinking of trying my hand at sps. I got a few spots near the top of my tank, well away from my zoo's(i do run carbon, BTW). a friend of mine in town here runs a coral farm, and i was thinking of buying a green hydnophora(hope i spelled that right) and a Montipora capricornis, he has green and orange in the monti. he told me the care and i've read up on them, but i wanted to see what you guys said before i bought them. i've heard a couple different stories on the hydnophora, some say easy to care for and some say they can be difficult. from what i've read, i have 2 spots that would be perfect for these guys. i was just wondering if any of you had any tips, tricks, or insights on their care. i want to make sure my bases are covered before i get them. thanks!

I have both monti cap & hydnophora. Monti cap was my 1st SPS and is still doing well. I currently have green, orange and purple. They have all been quite easy to keep. I keep these mid level in my 90g (mh) and closer to the top in my 45g (vho).

The hydnophora is also easy to keep, no problems and a relatively quick grower. It needs space separating it from other corals, but otherwise are ok. Very green. I actually keep it on the sandbed currently, away from all the other SPS & LPS. It's right next to xenia, but so far no problems between the two.

Good call....when hydnos fight...they FIGHT. Some people have lost their tanks due to hydnos touching another coral. Give it plenty of room and it is a beautiful coral to have:)

will a hydno be ok on my sandbed? i have a space between my rock piles that might work. far from other corals and good water movement. but will it get enough light? i have 6 54watt T-5's, but it's only a single reflector. how do hydno's fight? how can you lose your whole tank if they touch another coral? i can't seem to find anything on how they fight.

It should be ok..They have chemical warfare...just keep the skimmer clean and use carbon and you should be ok.:)

i figured it was chemical, but must be some strong chemicals! i have some zoa's on either side of where it would go, but they're up on the rocks, so maybe it would be ok. now i'm all scared to try it. but i think those hydno's look pretty sweet!

I got both the monti and hydnophora; both are easy to care. However, you need to keep there distance. Both are fast grower but the hydnophora can badly sting and sps if it get close to it.

thanks for the info guys! i think i'll try it. if the hydno doesn't work on the sandbed, there's another spot higher up i can put it. it would just be closer, not touching, but closer to other corals. thanks!

that went quicker than planned. my friend called and said he was at the farm. i ended up with a blue mushroom, a green monti cap, and a purple millepora. the millepora was a nice sized frag, for $20.

AAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!! about 20-30 min. into acclimating the millepora, the duct tape let loose and dumped the bag into the tank water. how hardy is the millepora? do you think it will make it? it was under 2 400watt MH, now it's under my 324watt T-5's, i have it in the sandbed for lighting acclimation(for a week, gradually move it up). should i move it up now? what can i do to ease it's pain?

milli's are pretty hardy, I'm a little confused to what happened...but I have a purple milli and I just put mine right in the water in the sand...it acclimated fine.

My hydophora is my favorite coral, it's also the brightest one, but I love how fuzzy it is.

i might still get a hydnophora. my tank is set-up great for acclimation. here's a pic of my tank setup:

i know the light fixture is crooked, i'm getting around to fixing it.
anyway, all i do is duct tape the bag the coral is in to the crooked T-5 housing, then i run a 1/4" line from the fuge(upper left) and start a siphon in to the bag. i figure that way i don't have to worry about temp differences or 2 dogs knocking over a bucket with a lot of water and a coral all over tha floor. this has worked multiple times, until last night when the duct tape holding the bag gave out and dumped the millepora in my tank water prematurely.

I have 2 hydnos. Door number one has never stung anyone. But #2 is deadly. And extends pretty far after dark. Hes been a bad boy more then once.

with the single reflector i would place it right under that tunze(about a couple inches from the very start of the output)....it needs to be a little higher up with only a single ref....IMO...of course start it lower and see where it likes it but my bet is it will ike it about 7-8 inches from the waters surface...keep in mind the flow of course
