Hydor SELTZ L45 -- good or bad?

It's a good product. One of my friend run his for a year without any problems.

I would call Marine Depot and ask them if they recommend it for external use. They are usually pretty honest with their opinions.

its good. If it survives a computer watercooling loop (high backpressure/temp) it will do fine in an aquarium. I have had mine for about 2 years now running 24/7 keeping my linux servers' processor cool. It's not very loud either. I normally use eheims for that, but I was pleasently surprised with the hydor.

I did contact marinedepot and they also recommend that pump for external use.
