Hypo in a FOWLR

I am actually wondering about how well hypo works out long term in a FOWLR display tank? I have a bad feeling one of my Puffers has a bit of ich beginning and I just want to be ready in case. I guess removing most or all of the LR would be a good idea? Lower to 1.010...I have a hydrometer.

How does this affect the biological filtration? Would it crash the tank?

The problem would be that I have no QT tank big enough for all my fish or even my one puffer to live in for a 6 week period. The puffer is WAY too big for my 40G QT. He would freak out!

Any advice? Im hoping it doesnt turn into anything but I have a bad feeling...

Oh sorry, I meant for the tanks biological filtration long term, I wasnt thinking of doing hypo for long term. No longer than 6 weeks.

I actually think it may be better to just QT the puffer in the 40G asap and hopefully he will be ok.

What about all the other fish though? Should I just wait and see if they get ich too? If the puffer has it, then its in the tank and I guess could come back at anytime...

I'm doing it right now, and all is well. Here's the positives of doing it in your main tank i've found. Not much stress on the fish as they don't get netted and taken out, there's the same space for them, the biological bacteria is not affected.

Cons. You must remove all LR, corals, inverts, all LS will die.

I didn't have any ammonia spike, my skimmer doesn't pull much but thats to be expected in a .009 sg. All ick is gone after a few days, on week 4 and all fish are happy. The critters all died in the sand, but as soon as i put the rock back there will be tons of pods and what not so the sand will be ls in weeks.
