Excellent question!
"anything" includes bacteria, all the micro-organisms in LR & substrate, algae (including coralline), etc.
This question is very common. Even if you get rid of ich this way, it will come back if you don't use a QT on every new fish. I think its (almost, cma) impossible to have long term success in our hobby without a QT. IMO, a QT/HT is as important as any piece of equipment you own----any good book on our hobby will agree.
If you paid yourself $1 an hour for the work involved in TRYING to cure parasites in a DT, you could easily buy a HT/QT on Craig's List. Craig's List has lots of cheap, used stuff and I suspect much of it comes from hobbyists who have given up because they refuse to use a QT on all new livestock.
Everything was QT except for the corals, so I think I brought in a few tester SPS that had crap on it. The reason why I am asking if I can do it in the DT is because it would be simplier to remove 3 pieces of corals vs a ton of fish.
There hasn't been ich in my tank for a long time..so this is recent T_T
I would remove everything thats alive, thats not a fish, within reason. So snails, crabs, plants, corals, all need to come out. Leave the fish and hypo.
