I just set up my nano 29 gal tank and brought live rock (some rock live and some was not)...but now my rock is turning a mustard yellow...why and what is it? thanks

[welcome]

hey fellow arizonian :)

how long has the tank been set up? It sounds a bit like it could just be normal alga....is it more of a rust color or is it really a yellow? If it really is a yellow, then it could be a sponge.

again, welcome to reef central :)

hey, thanks for the reply it is like a mustardy yellow color, and it has only been set up for about a week. I just put live sand in yesterday, the rock that is alive have red like little tree's on it, i just hope that the yellow stuff will not kill that. hey thanks so much for the help and i am so excited that i learned about this site...talk soon

sounds like a diatom outbreak, part of the normal algae cycle. It will not last long, if it is. And may be replaced by the even more annoying hair algae (that's what happened in my tank...someone said it would, and sure enough, it did). Then the clean up crew took care of the hair algae. Two weeks later, all was clean. :)

Without seeing a picture, it sounds like you have a diatom bloom. This is part of a new tank's natural algae progression. Keep your water paramters in check (0 ammonia, nitrite) through water changes. You can consider adding a *few* snails and small hermits. Some folks like to go for a snail a gallon; I prefer a smaller population.

I'm not sure if it is that sponge thing, but if its mustard yellow, i'm doubting it is diatoms. They're rusty colored...
