I just caught the mantis shrimp that has wreeked havoc on my poor crustaceans. He is not overly colorful, I'm pretty sure this is him

but I'm not totally sure.....I was advised before to just put him in my sump....so i did.....I have miracle mud, a chunk of live rock, and calupera algae in my sump......Will he be ok in there or do I need to try to remove him again.....he has access to the other chambers of my sump as well, which I didn't think was a problem i guess until i stick my hand in there and he smashes my finger:rollface:

As long as it doesn't have access to any pumps, or the outgoing plumbing, it should be fine.

How large is the sump? It might be good to try to get an ID to see the approximate size it will reach.

Just a 10 gal. sump....I'll see if I can get a good picture of it...He would have to do some serious maneuvering to get the the return pump

A lot of the smashers stay within up to 85mm in size, so it's probably fine in there. If you end up not wanting it, there are always perople looking for stomatopods on here.

Looks cool, though!

A picture is a long shot, but it is definitely one of these:

Gonodactylaceus falcatus

Gonodactylus chiragra

Maybe, but I don't think it's Neogonodactylus bredini

Pseudosquilla ciliata

I know that's a diverse list....but he's fairly small to see much detail....He's just dark and dull colored, maybe 1.5 inches long..

Will I need to supply anything extra for him to munch on in the sump...I'm new in this area? There are of course plenty of pods and bristleworms, and this and that, but nothing really there to SMASH

Bashing helps keep their clubs conditioned. You can feed it on Krill, mysis, scallops, what ever you feed the tank, and when ever yu go to the LFS pick up a couple of cheap snails for the mantis to beat on. Also provide it with a piece of PVC about 2 - 3X its body length to hide in. If the mantis can't get out of the light, eventually it could have hair algae start growing on its shell and that can be fatal.
