I don't know what to do about a skimmer...

I recently bought a used AquaC Remora skimmer with the MaxiJet1200 PH. I modified (cut) my stupid Eclipse hood to allow for the skimmer. I hooked it up and couldn't stand the racket. Turned it off. Read some stuff on RC about the paper towel mod. Helped some, but the MaxiJet was incredibly loud (humming) and had a horrible vibration. Bought a new MJ1200. Same humming, less vibration, but still there.

I have the skimmer and MJ sort of in the left corner of my tank, but the pump is not touching anything except the intake hose for the skimmer. I tried using it with and without the suction cup mounting.

Everyone I talk to (including Steve at AquaC customer service) says the MJs are very quiet and that the humming/vibration is not normal. But in trying 2 of these MJs I don't see how they could say that.

Do you think it could be my placement in the tank? Does it need a lot of clearance around it? Would it make less noise if I connected it to a longer intake hose (as opposed to the 1" long one that came with it) and placed the pump deeper in my tank?

AquaC says I could use another powerhead that has an output of 300 gph, but I cannot find any with that rating.

My tank is small - only 29 gallons. There are very few skimmers that I can find that are rated for small tanks. The nano skimmers seem to be for much smaller tanks, and all the rest are for larger tanks. I don't need the most fabulous skimmer in the world, just one that will do a decent job and not suck electricity.

Sorry for the long post, but I am new to this hobby and trying to do the right thing, but I am getting very frustrated. I cannot do a sump right now, and I'm limited on space (max 2.75" available between the tank and wall). And since I'm just getting started, I can't spend a boatload of money.

I see a lot of posts in support of the Remora, but then I see others that hate them. Part of me wants to get one of those little cheapie Current USA Fission skimmers for $30. Its gotta do something, right? I could buy 5 of them for what a single remora costs - and the Remora is one of the cheaper ones.

Do you have any suggestions? It doesn't seem like there are any equivalent filtration options to having a protein skimmer.

In case it matters, I only have 3 chromis, 2 ocellaris, and some snails and crabs with 35# LR and 40# live sand. Someday I had hoped to get a few corals, but it doesn't seem like thats gonna happen if I can't resolve the skimmer issue.

Well... If you can sell the remora and get another skimmer I'd look into the Tunze nano skimmers. Everything I read about them says that they are absolutely silent. They sit in tank, but are probably less intrusive than the MJ and the assorted pipes/return for the Remora.

I think thats what I'm going to try. I would rather look at the Tunze in the tank than the MaxiJet, and I too, am now hearing good things. I just ned to know wide the collection cup is...
