I hate hermit crabs!

Well, not really. But they are a major pain when I get new clams and try to settle them in. Since I am such a "good" guy I pay outrageous prices to get absolutely miniscule clams from Drs F&S that they sell as Aquacultured. I am sure that they are, because how would a diver find such small clams in such a big ocean? (Joke)

Anyway, my hermit crabs (a few scarlets, but even the dwarf ones) can easily knock these clams off the rock and into the sand bed. Before I got my MH lighting I thought it was because the clams didn't have enough light and weren't even trying to attach. Now, I am not so sure. Light is plenty (450W in 90 gallons and the "clam rock" is the high point in the tank), but it may be that the clams just attach too slowly to get secure before the next hermit comes along and bangs them about. I tried creating a little "fence" out of a portion of a plastic mesh "flower pot" designed for aquatic plantings (lilys in koi ponds, etc.) I am sure it won't keep the hermits out, but it should stop the clams before they roll off the rock altogether. But now the fence is floating around the tank, so I need to figure out how to secure it and, of course, it looks VERY silly.

Rant rant rant. Thanks for the ears.

I haven't had any because I've heard that they are nothing but trouble. Good luck with your clam pasture!

in defence of the hermit, large snails / stars / etc ..... can / will also knock your clams over when small and not attached. also if you have not actually seen the offending crab in action it could just be the clam trying to move to a different location and every time you prop him back up he just tries to move again.
