1 1/2|" diameter body, all black, with black hairy legs. I have seen it twice. can anyone tell me what it is??? I am afraid it has eaten my mystery wrasse who hangs out in the same rock. How to get rid of it?

Probably a Gorilla crab

Probably a Gorilla crab

If it is black and hairy and only comes out at night and is fast when you shine a flashlight on it-------then you probably have a gorilla crab (a famous hitchhiker). I have 1 in my reef tank, unable to catch him-----smart little fellow. When small the are not bad, but when and if able to grow will bother small fish and corals, knocking over rocks too!!!

I just caught a pretty big gorilla crab out of my system. I used a fish trap but any container will work, like a glass or something. Put some flake food at the far end of the container and then make it hard for him to get to the food by using some rubble rock obsticles between the entrance and the food. He is quick, but if he has a maze to go through you will be able to get him. I trapped mine in under 15 min's. Even got it on video ;)

Good luck and happy fishin

took me months to finally get rid of mine, he came out for a stroll one evening just b4 lights out and i was able to grab him, tore all kinds of things to shreads when he was in there.. Get him OUT!

any one have a pic of this guy? I think i may have one as well. built like a line backer, black, furry, has beady red eyes.... has not picked anyone off yet but looks like he could do so handily.

If he looked like this:

...then he was a gorilla crab.

Take a glass, vase, or something like it. Tilt it solidly up against the rock with food in it after your lights go out. I usually checked it about every 20 minutes. Sometimes it takes a couple days.

Are these gorilla crabs cabable of doing harm to me if I catch it with my hand? The one I have is doing damage to my zoanthids...completely ravishing them off the rock. It's about an inch and a half around...seems fully mature.

LOL, if they pinch you probably, some of those claws look pretty wicked. Let us know how that works.

You may want to get your speech dictation software working before you fish that crab out with your fingers.

Ha! Ask this serpent star. That crab that I posted a picture of (above) did this to him. I guarantee that this stars disk has a tougher exterior than your little pink fingers!

I just pulled out a 1inch gorilla crab the other day. Should've taken a picture. I found mine while looking at my snapping shrimp in the middle of the night.
