I saw 3 or 4 here in thailand this year with a shipment of sub adults and adults, from Vietnam I think.

Back in 2002 and 2003 Chaetodontoplus septentrionalis were available at a very tiny size once a year. These fishes would arrive from Taiwan, and normally 75-100 of them were brought into California, all of which were the size of a 1/2 dollar, and were stunning at this small size.

We can only hope that we see this again very soon, and I will keep trying!

Sorry for the very poor picture, it was years ago.

Kev the fish pictured above has just become available in Japan at Blue Harbor. What do you make of this fish being available at this timem of year? Thanks, T

Also the fish you pictured Kevin looks to be well on her way to adult coloration at the size of a half dollar. I wonder how big the fish is that I pictured above and how long they keep their juvi colors? Lastly I always remember that in Scott Michael's Reef Fishes that he states that bluelines are now being commercially raised? Whats the deal with that? Thanks, T

I would think this is primarily due to the breeding cycle of these fishes, and this is the time of year when these tiny individuals inhabit areas and at a depth where they can be harvested safely.

Years ago, the fishes imported at this size from Taiwan were called Tank Raised, along with the Maculosus angelfish (Pomacanthus maculosus)that are available from time to time.

IMO the development of Angelfishes from their juvenile to adult colorations is dependent on both genetics, as well as environmental factors such as how many young and full adults are present in their territory.

It does appears that most fishes of the genus Chaetodontoplus develop into their transitioning stage at a very small size when compared to other genera of Pomacanthidae.

Cheers,

Here is an image of one of those "captive raised" bluelines, when it was about 4 years old. I still have it, but it is suffering from chronic edema, don't know why. Another one I had got sent to another public aquarium. I wrote about them in the November, 2006 issue of TFH magazine - I used the Fishbase name of "bluestripe angel".

If it's in blue harbor I would guess that it would be local caught in Japan, rather than Vietnam.

For that coloration it would have to be very, very small! Like dime sized. :0
