wow this is a addictive hobby!!! i have a 12g nano cube and its not even running yet due to the cost of getting everything together. a little at a time is how i'm working it. that way the misses does'nt feed me to the fishes!:fish2: anyway, when i originaly went tank shopping i couald'nt find a tall tank i wanted so i opped for the other. but i went yardsailing today and found a 10g with a heater, gravel, plastic plants, light aand aquatic hob filter for 5 bucks! so i grabed it up. now i thought this wouald be a great little tank just needs a cleaning. so i clean it out and start to wash it off and turn it on its end and i have a moment of clarity.:ape: i see the tank i want, i just have to do some tinkering. i know were theres another 10g for 5 bucks i can grab tomorrow. i can then remove the seal and silicone off the bottom of one and remove the reenforceing plastic from the other. you see where i'm going dont ya. then remove one end piece and silicone the bottom i took off to were the top wouald be on the other! and then i have my 10g tall rimless tank .

dont forget craigslist, i got a tank (20 gallon high) w/ lights (96 watts quad coralife 20") and about 40 pounds of live rock, heater, magnetic cleaners, fish food, net, and some misc...other stuff like medecines and water additives and stand (which i didn't end up keeping), all for $100 =)

this is not a good idea....
a> tank is not designed to be used in this orientation.
b> glass is not thick enough to be used as a rimless tank that tall.
c> glass edges under that plastic are either sharp and rough or at the very best very ugly.
d> you will be very hard pressed to pull either tank apart without breaking them to pieces.
e> a tank this tall with such a small foot print will have very poor gas exchange.
you would be much better off going to a glass shop and having them cut the pieces you need in 3/8" glass and do it right the first time.

+1 to everthing Nano said. But I say give it a try fill it with water and let it sit in the back yard for a week or two. But I think the glass is going to give.

Yeah it did'nt work. But it keept me busy for a little while Wich is part of the fun in a hobby. I like to fail at times so I can succeed in the future. My next step is to call a glass co. So will a 10 gal. High be ok if I have the glass cut and I glue together? If not ill go with a 15.

yeah it will be fine if you use 3/8" glass (9mm) and assemble it in the correct orientation (sides around the bottom) with the proper silicone (RTV103 clear, or RTV108 black, or SCS1200 also black). i would also do a euro brace around the bottom too or use 1/2" glass for the bottom...

look at other tanks that are 16" tall without trim for an idea of how thick the glass should be, the volume of water behind the glass is of little consequence, it is the height of the water you need to concern yourself with...the water pressure acting on the bottom of the tank is same in a 75 as it is in a 10 if they are the same height...

Wouald tempered be better for the bottom?

no...

all tempered glass does is reduce the shipping weight of the tank...and makes it impossible to drill...it also provides a smaller surface area for siliconing (assuming the only reason for using tempered is to use thinner glass)

Ok ill go with the 1/2". What wouald be the best di.mensions to a 10gal tall you think? I'm wanting it for a seahorse tank.
