Nikon D40. Lighter and more versatile than most other DSLR's, perfect for beginner slr users and will grow with you as well. I think the D3000 replace it though as the current model. descent price, great camera. Check out the photography section of the forums for more info. I have the D40 and several other nikons. Out of $5k worth of camera's I use my D40 the most.
