ich on foxface

I think my Foxface has ich. I have never had a problem before, and I just started using garlic in the foods. I thought that was supposed to prevent ich? I also have recently swiched from brine to mysis could this be the problem.

WHAT DO I DO, I have corals in the main display and there is no way I can catch him for a QT tank.

I lost 2 clownfish and a kole tang because I waited too long to break everything down to catch my regal tang that had ich. It always had a few white spots and then it broke out all over one day (i moved some LR around and I think I stressed him out). I thought it would go away if I fed garlic heavily. I tried kick ich and that didnt work for me either. I had to break the tank down and put the LR and corals in tubs to catch all the fish. Then I started Hypo treatment in a QT tank (you can also use a copper medication). I can't say all your fish will get ich because some seem to be immune, but it multiples like crazy when it falls off the fish. Thats why you have to leave your display tank free of fish for at least 30-60 days so ich has nothing to attach to and dies. Ich also hides in the gills of fish without us seeing it. I never had ich for 2 years and then it came down hard. Also if you do hypo try to keep the fish in there for at least 4 weeks after the last spot of ich falls off.

it will take time but you can get rid of ich.

I've had moderate success with melafix and pimafix. Reef safe, but you will see your leathers and star polyps droop for a day or two. On the other hand, I haven't lost any coral from using these.

I would do hypo in QT 4 - 6 weeks is recommended I did 6 myself. I had an outbreak too and lost all my fish, I did try the garlic, fish likes it but doesn't help killing ich, it will come back stronger every time and kill the fish. Now I put everyone throug hypo in QT. It seems that it's very important to QT the fish, it doesn't matter where it is coming from, bad outbreaks out there. I didn't QT for more than 2 years before and one day I got a PBT and that did it. Lesson learned :)
follow the links that Pacific Reefs posted that's what I did. Good luck.

Garlic will not prevent ich. What it does do is boost the immune system of the fish. Did you add anything new to the tank at all..even LR or coral? Often ich will go unnoticed in our tanks...it does'nt want to kill it's host...it needs it to survive. But when a fish becomes stressed and loses it's slime coat, that's when an outbreak can happen. The only way to insure there will be no ich, is to remove all the fish and do hyposalinity on them, leave the tank fallow{fishless} for 6-8 weeks, and never introduce anything new into the tank {of course new fish could be added if they were also hypo-d', but ich can hitch a ride on anything in a certain phase of it's life cycle}}. If you want to remove the foxface and QT him for hypo-salinity, drain the tank down almost all the way saving the water. Have some extra water on hand as well. I did this and even removed the whole top portion of my reef, corals and all. Placed them in a large tub with the water I removed, then with most of the water out catching the fish is very easy. It's also a good time to give the rocks a swish in the tub to remove some detritus. Put the rock back, do a good sized water change, and you are done.
Here is the best article I have found on hypo-salinity:

the other day i drained my water down to like 40 %

this made it alot easier to catch . i had a good size pump so i just pumped the water back quickly .
just a thought.

i had ich on my regal tang. when i first got him .

did a freshwater dip and hes now my healthiest fish.(had hime a year and a half)

another thing is a cleaner shrimp , cleaner wrasse, or neon gobies.

how long has the fish been in the tank?

P.S. there IS a way...you just have to be willing.;)

well the other dilema is if I do catch him, the only other tank I have is a 2 1/2 gal and he is to big to be in that.

Go buy a 20 long or see if someone can lend you one..they are under $30.{gee..now I feel bad, did'nt I get one from you? :( }Let me know if you decide to do it. I have a filter you could probably borrow{it belongs to someone else but I'll ask them;) } I will put the bio-wheel from it in my sump to get some bacteria on it for you. LMK

ok all this was in vain, it was a false alarm. I checked him this morning and the little spots are gone and he looks great, all other fish look great too.

Dont count your chickens too soon! I dont want to seem negative, but fish can shiow signs of it one day and not the next. And sometimes when it does come back...it worse.

Good Luck.
