my hippo blue tang had ick and it is getting worse by the day. what causes this and is there a way to rid of it quickly.

someone at the store said dip the fish in fresh water for 5 minutes?

any suggestions. i dont want to loose the fish.

You need to qt this fish and treat with cupramine(copper). You could also qt and treat with hypo but i prefer the cupramine as it is faster and if done right is not harmful to the fish.Freshwater baths will give some help to the fish but will not kill marine ich.If you have other fish in your display tank you need to treat them all as your tank is now infected.I would recomend leaving it fishless for 6to 8 weeks..hope this helps

If one fish has ich then you should assume that all fish have ich.

FW baths may provide some temporary relief to the fish but its not considered a cure - further - an improper FW bath may do more harm than good.

If you want an ich free system you will need to QT and treat all fish for ich - copper or hyposalinity. You will then need to keep your display tank without fish for 5-6 weeks - since ich need fish to perpetuate their life cycle any ich within the DT will naturally die off.

I would recommend hyposalinity over copper. Easier on the fish and easier to administer.

my hippo has it every now and then i feed him garlic in there food give multiple feedings keep him happy and healthy he does well use to put him in another tank ich would be gone then i put him back in main tank he gets it rite back keep all your fish healthy they can fite it off on there own

While overall health is a factor in survival - very healthy fish die of ich all the time.

Tangs don't do well with some coppers - probably because they lack the thicker scales of most fish - cupramine is less harsh than most copper products and many aquarist have reported no problems using with tangs. One can always use hyposalinity which arguably is easier on the fish and easier to administer.
