My 40 gal cube is barely 5 months old, I had a hair algae episode a couple of months ago bought a few snails and they really helped, for the last two weeks the algae has exploded. I have these small bundles growing in tank, can anyone tell me what it may be

I have a very low bio load 2 clownfish and a small RBTA. My Nitrate last week using RedSea was 0, Phosphates (Hanna Checker) is between .03 and .04. Will check both again tomorrow.

Looks like green hair algae (GHA)

I agree.

How goes it John? Hope all is well with you and the family.

Your tank is still pretty new however your rock does look like it came from your old system. I battled hair algae for over a year before my tank was established. It can live with very low PO4. I would suggest siphoning as much as possible as often as possible just to keep it in check. Depending on what your keeping in the tank you could consider more aggressive means of PO4 reduction. As far as the Hanna Checker, I find its results vary so don't rely too much on it.

Hi James,
Everyone is well, still drive me crazy, but that's their job! I'm changing 5 gal a week, pulling out everyday, trying very much to be patient. The rock is from the old tank but I've scrubbed it several times, still take it out now and brush in old water and replace. Thanks Hope all is well by you - Have a great Easter!

John,
I had this same issue in my frag tank. I had pulled the eggcrate out because I had an issue with an aggressive macro algae that grew all over it. I scrubbed the eggcrate and waited for all the macro to die off and then put the eggcrate back into the frag tank. Within a week I had a hair algae outbreak. This only occurred in the frag tank, even though it is part of my whole system with the DT, sump and refugium. Only 2 things got rid of it......time and turbo snails. It did take some time. I found it very difficult to pull that stuff off of the eggcrate or off of frags......the snails did a good job....EVENTUALLY.

Thanks Frank, I guess I knew I had to be patient but it's comforting to hear it from everybody else. The turbo's do a good job, Hope all is well.

John
