I've had a "snapping shrimp" in my tank for over a year, and I have only gotten partial, very fleeting glimpses. It stays in its burrows all the time. If I shine a light into one of it's common burrows, I can see two big, dark orange claws attached to what otherwise looks like a regular shrimp. I never get a good look at it, but what little I do see doesn't look like a mantis or snapping shrimp. The most distinctive feature is the two, big, dark orange claws...they look about the same size and in the general shape of boxing gloves. He's still very small...maybe 1-1.5 inches (after a year), but his snaps have been loud from the start. We don't see obvious signs of predation (yet), but we did have a very big Sallylightfoot crab disappear one night (with any signs of anything later) and maybe a few small snails time to time. I'm getting worried because I just put a beautiful Tahiti maxima clam into the tank and I'm hoping he doesn't become an expensive dinner one night. We've tried everything to catch the shrimp for over a year, including a specialized mantis trap baited with different types of food...but that caught everything but the shrimp.
