ID please - brown leather-type thing

it grows in stalks and also encrusts. similar to a gorgonian, i guess. but ive never seen it branch, it only grows vertically or encrusts to the side and then grows up again. the polyps retract just like a finger leather.

any ideas?

I think it actually might be an encrusting gorgonian. (Erythropodium sp.) Check this out.

Sorry I missed the part where you said it grows stalks. I thought it was encrusting on the rock that was that shape. Nevermind
