 In spite of what it looks like, I am relatively certain it is NOT a Giant Pacific Octopus so the question is, what largish red octopus lives in NZ?

From the white spots and size it could be P.cordiformis (the New Zealand equivalent of our GPO) but none of the photos I have seen of this one show that red color. Most of the pictures I have seen of P.cordiformis and O.maorum (Aussie version) are from aquarium posts of an octo just chilling out so maybe it turns red like the GPO when excited.

My best guess person in NZ (Portobello Aquarium) tells me that both the NZ larger octos (O.maorum and P.cordiformis) will turn red if they are excited, particularly if they are hungry and spy dinner (or as she has seen, escaping a tank). She is thinking the later because this guy looks pretty large and the Pinnoctopus is the larger of the two.
