What is this red stuff?

They look like little red branches growing out of my life rock near the little star polyp. If it doesn't show up well I might just draw a picture of it. they look like little red palm trees.

My levels are good. still testing at lfs. thanks.
 
I think what you are refer. to is normal on live rock to have these growths without a better picture I would say either Gelidiella(gelidiaceae) or Jania (corallinaceae) algae.
 
what is a good web site to look up pictures of these different algae and get a few comments about what they contribute to and take from the environment?
 
i looked around on some sites with the assistance of the ideas of the radar tech above and i decided that for now I am going to call it "red coralline algae." red because of the particular pigment it has in its system that absorbs blue light and reflects red if i have it right and coralline because of its rough texture that makes it similar to coral in being resistant to abrasion. algae because it's a little monster that grows in your reef tank.
 
that's a really cool site btw. i think it looks most like Centroceras clavulatum but i'm not totally sure since it is still in a small stage...
