I have no experience with fish disease. I acquired a mature tank recently and therefore assumed it would be disease free. Once I set it up, the hippo tang developed some spots on him which I'm thinking is crypto/velvet but not 100% sure. The picture is not totally clear but some spots are white and some are black, all are raised slightly. He has a couple spots on his eye as well. Breathing and eating normally and does not exhibit any signs of stress. Other fish, including tangs are fine.

This sounds a lot like this thread.

Pic #1 looks sorta like Ich to me. But you saying some of the spots are black and even on the eye doesn't sound like Ich. That sounds more like damage, bacterial infection, or possibly even Lymphocystis.

Nobody else?

HumbleFish, you're saying that crypto does not usually occur on the eyes? Taking a closer look, I think hippo is getting worse and the coral beauty potentially has it too. It's definitely lots of white raised spots. The black spots is whats throwing me off.

There are more expensive fish in the tank and I don't want to loose them.

I' can't tell much from the pics. Your description sure sounds like ich. If that's the case all fish will need to be treated in a QT/HT while the DT stays fishless for 10-12 weeks. You have too many fish for the tank transfer method, so I'd use Cupramine copper. Chloroquinine Phosphate is being used quite often. I don't know why you would have assumed the set up you bought to be disease free. I'm just opposite: I assume all fish I acquire (from any source) have parasites and proceed accordingly.

Thanks for the reply. I really didn't have a choice in the matter. I bought the whole tank with the LR, substrate, fish, etc. So, in my understanding of ich, there wasn't any type of quarantine process that would have helped me if the tank is infected. Maybe I'm wrong here.

Leaving the tank empty for 10-12 weeks sounds really harsh, though I do not doubt that it's a sound advice. Will taking coral and inverts out and treating the DT with cupramine work? There aren't a lot of corals, and frankly I would rather lose all of them than the expensive fish.

I do plan to add lots of frags, but not until this tank's been up and running (ich free) for at least a couple months.

Now that I think about it, I have seen fish with Crypto under the exterior of the eye. Under is the whole key here. If these fish have Crypto, the white spots will be just under their skin, not on the surface.

The black spots could be Black Ich, or something entirely non-parasitic.
