I was wondering if anyone can tell me if this is the same as Tubs Alien Eye Echino. Thanks.

It's under a 150W DE Ushio 20K bulb. It's actually not that big, maybe 1.5" around. Got it as a small frag about 6 months ago on a trade. I know I have to play with the white balance on my camera. It's more purple in person.

I am curious about placement, lighting, and flow of yours. I have one which suffered massive tissue loss during a dinoflagellate bloom and I havent been able to make it happy since. It was a very new addition at the time and I hadnt established where it would be happy. The remaining tissue expands and isnt receeding but it also isnt growing either.

im not sure if id agree with the mycedium id. mycediums mouths will all grow away from the coral and upwards. its hard to explain without knowing what your looking for.
if it is indeed a mycedium you own graveyardworm i can help some. i own a few and find that they do best at the bottum of my tank with little flow. they are very delicate when it comes to browning out so try and keep them in the same spot and dont move them much at all. they take a while to adjust and get thier color back, but once they do they will start to grow. but if you were to move it up a few inches, chances are it would brown back out and stop growing again.
low light, low flow, place it and forget it, stable parameters. those are the things ive found to be key for keeping these corals happy.

Thank you, I kinda based my id on the appearance of the mouths and skeletal structure which you can kinda make out. Since its only an inch and a half across it probably hasnt developed many positive id traits yet. Mine is very brown, I've tried low flow but it really accumulates detritus. I noticed in Bornemans book he indicates placing vertical might be natural so I thought I would try that.

I am with xdusty6920 on the Mycedium id. I am pretty sure it's an Echinophyllia or Echinopora based on comparison to the other Echinos I have. In terms of placement, most of my chalices are low in the tank. I have also found that they do better in nutrient rich water. I had some in my SPS dominated tank for a while and noticed very little growth. When I moved them to my work tank, which is skimmerless, they grew at an amazing rate. I find that's the case for most LPS and softies.

Here is an example of a Mycedium, at least that's what it was sold to me as.

yes that picture is a mycedium. do you see what i ment about the unmistakable mouths protruding from the coral?
also graveyardworm- what you read from boreman is correct. placing them vertically does seem to produce better results in my experience. although they will still eventually grow into a cup that sits alittle horizontal. but hey, its a good thing to have it grow that much!

Mycediums have every eye facing the rim of the coral. Its unmistakeable if you look closely. Nice pic on one above BTW.

nicely put gmax. its alot easier to say "every eye facing the rim" then my discription of " the mouths kinda come out from and away and kinda upwards from the coral" lol
