So what you're saying is your Monti setosa looks like.... a monti setosa?

I doubt it is M. setosa, but do check out M. spumosa and M. hispida. One really needs to closely examine the coenosteum to seperate Montipora species. It is not a M. capricornis or M. foliosa. Neither will produce such towering outgrowths.

I've seen orange caps that nodule in one person's tank plate and whorl in another. Who knows though, maybe I'm completely misinformed.

I wonder if that was really a M. capricornis? Mine show small bumps, but never something that towers above the plate! Most of the 'caps' I've seen were not M. capricornis. This seems to be a relatively rare coral in aquariums, compared to M. foliosa, M. florida, M. hodgsoni, etc. Funny, as it is pretty distinctive, having no coenosteum ridges, which the other foliates have, but the name 'capricornis' seems to possess a certain magic no one wants to give up.

What interesting is we have other monti that plate like normal (orange, purple, green). When we fragged this monti and placed it in a different spot in the tank is started growing upwards again. I don't think it looking for more light because it's under 400w 10k MH & 110 20k VHOs. We haven't see a monti that looks like this.
